Our Commitment
Kingston School for Inclusive Education was founded on the belief that every person — regardless of disability — deserves full participation in society. That conviction extends to our website. We are committed to ensuring this site is accessible to people with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive disabilities.
Conformance Status
We aim for conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. The following features are implemented:
- Skip to main content — a keyboard-accessible link at the top of every page lets users bypass the navigation bar.
- Semantic HTML — headings, landmarks (header, nav, main, footer), and ARIA labels are used throughout.
- Keyboard navigation — all interactive elements (links, buttons, forms) are reachable and operable by keyboard alone.
- Sufficient colour contrast — text colours meet WCAG AA contrast ratios against their backgrounds.
- Alt text — all meaningful images carry descriptive alternative text.
- Focus indicators — visible focus rings are shown on all interactive elements.
- Responsive design — the site works on mobile, tablet, and desktop screen sizes.
- No auto-playing audio — all video content is muted by default.
- Form labels — all form inputs have associated visible labels.
Known Limitations
We are actively working to improve the site. Current known limitations:
- The embedded Google Maps iframe may not be fully accessible to screen reader users. We include a direct link to open the map in Google Maps as an alternative.
- Some older images in our gallery do not yet have detailed alt text — we are reviewing these.
Assistive Technology Support
This website has been tested with and is designed to support:
- Screen readers (NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack)
- Keyboard-only navigation
- Browser zoom up to 200% without loss of content
- High-contrast mode
